The ministry issued a statement on Monday after media reports on the matter created concerns.

The reports said bamboos were used in place of iron sheets on wooden slippers of the rail bridges in Kurhigram. In some places, tree trunks were used instead of wooden slippers.

The ministry said there is 'no scope' of accidents to occur on such bridges because those 'do not actually take the load of the train'.

"Bamboo and pieces of wood are being used as extra support for a long time locally so that the rails cannot go out of square and come closer," the statement said.

Railways Minister Mujibul Haque told reporters at a programme at Kamalapur Railway Station: "Trains never run on these things. Those do not bear the load of the train."
