Police said the clash erupted around 12pm between residents of two villages, who were armed with local weapons.

Those injured have been admitted to the Brahmanbarhia Sadar Hospital.

Locals said the clash was a sequel of an argument between two men from the villages earlier on Saturday.

Police had to lob tear-gas shells and fire rubber bullets to disperse the warring villagers .

"It took almost one and half hour to bring the situation under control. Additional forces have been called up from Brahmanbarhia, Ashuganj and Sarhail," said local highway police's Assistant Sub Inspector Abdul Qader.

Traffic resumed on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway around 1:30pm, added the police officer.
