Formal charges have been brought against Badrul Alam, a leader of ruling Awami League's student affiliate Bangladesh Chhatra League at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet.

Investigating officer Harun-ur-Rashid submitted the chargesheet on Tuesday to the court of the Sylhet's chief  metropolitan magistrate.

The court has fixed Nov 15 to hear the matter, said Rashid. "Badrul has given a confessional statement to the court. Police have also obtained the video clip of the attack."

Sylhet Government Women's College student Khadiza was hacked and critically injured by Badrul on Oct 3. She was in life support for several days before gaining consciousness.

Badrul carried out the attack reportedly for an unrequited love affair with Khadiza. He was caught by the people who witnessed the incident and handed over to the police immediately after the attack.

A video of Badrul hacking Khadiza was posted on the social media fuelled public anger.

Khadiza is now being treated at Dhaka's Square Hospital and doctors say her condition was now better.

Badrul, a final year economics student at the SUST, has been expelled by the university authorities and the BCL also suspended him.
