Three others, injured in the attack, at the district's Daudkandi Upazila, have been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The car carrying Monir Hossain Sarkar, Titash Upazila's Ziarkandi union council chairman, was attacked around 8am at Daudkandi's Gouripur area, according to one Mintu Mia Sarkar, who brought them to the hospital.

DMCH police outpost's Sub Inspector Bachchu Mia said four people were brought in at the hospital around 10am, after which the doctors declared UP Chairman Monir and his associate Mahiuddin Bhuiyan dead.

He said there were wounds inflicted by bullets and sharp weapons on their bodies.

Two others, identified as 'Oli', 'Suman' and 'Ismail', are being treated at the hospital.

Mintu Mia, who brought them to the DMCH, told reporters that the UP chairman was travelling to the Comilla city to appear in a case hearing.

Assailants attacked the car when it was caught in traffic in the Gouripur area. "At least 10 men opened fire targeting the car and hacked the occupants with sharp weapons before leaving," he said.
