Khadiza, who has been under treatment at the Dhaka hospital for the past two weeks, was taken out of her bed and she sat on a wheelchair for a while on Thursday, said the hospital’s Medicine and Critical Care Unit Consultant Dr Mirza Nazim Uddin.

He said the Sylhet Government Women’s College student was 'recovering fast'. "Khadiza's physical condition has improved. The nurses also took her for a spin on a wheelchair today."

Nazim said, on Wednesday they also took off the tubes that were placed on her throat for breathing. "She is breathing normally now."

Assaulted violently on Oct 3 on the Sylhet MC College campus by Badrul Alam, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit, Khadiza was taken to Square Hospitals the following day amidst a wave of protests.

She had received severe injuries in her brain, head, hands and legs in the machete attack.

After she was brought to Dhaka, Khadiza had undergone a surgery and was put on life support until Oct 13.

On Oct 17, another surgery was performed on her right hand to repair the muscle chain which was cut when she had tried to ward off the blows of the sharp weapon.

However, her family is still anxious about her recovery. They wish to take her abroad for better treatment.

Her uncle Abdul Kuddus told bdnews24.com: "She appeared 'restless' this morning. She looked like she was in pain."

"We want to take her abroad. But as the government has said that it will bear all her medical bills, we are urging for its cooperation."

But Dr Mirza Nazim Uddin said there was nothing to be worried about. "Her relatives are looking at her emotionally, that's why they thought she was in pain."
