Identified as Motaleb Hossain Lipu, the deceased was a second year student of Mass Communication and Journalism at the university and a resident of room 253 at the hall.

Motihar police OC Humayun Kabir said the body was spotted on Thursday morning lying in a gutter near the dining room of the hall.

The body with a mark of grave injury on the head was naked, said police. A dining room worker 'Rina' corroborated what the police said.

"The mark of injury indicates that he was murdered. An autopsy would ascertain the cause of the death," said RMP Deputy Commissioner Amir Zafar.

Lipu returned to hall from his village home in Jhenaidah's Mokimpur on Wednesday night and had a chat with his roommate Rajibul Islam over their final exams, said Rajib.

He claimed that nothing abnormal could be noticed in Lipu's behaviour.

Lipu was not involved in politics, he added.

"Lipu came to the room around 12am on Thursday. I heard a sound of the door opening later at night but did not bother," he told bdnews24.com.

Rajib said Lipu used to wake up early in the morning and go out for exercise.

RU Proctor Mujibul Haq said both police and the university authority were looking into the matter.
