The victims include a mother and her 7-year-old son while a six-month pregnant woman lost her unborn baby before she herself died from injuries later in the evening.

Police said the ambulance, entering into the DMCH in high speed, lost control and first hit a rickshaw and ran over several pedestrians near the emergency wing. The driver’s assistant was at the wheel, police said.

Two of the deceased have been identified by police as Goleynur Begum, 25 and her 7-year-old son 'Sakib'. A middle-aged man also died on the spot but his identity is yet to be ascertained, police and witnesses said.

The fourth victim, six-month pregnant Amena Begum Surji, lost her foetus to the accident, a duty doctor told bdnews24.com.

Surji succumbed to her injuries around 6:15pm, DMCH police camp's Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia confirmed.

Five others injured have been admitted there.

Goleynur Begum's husband 'Ferdous' told bdnews24.com that they came from Patuakhali two days ago to have his son Sakib treated for injuries he had sustained in a road accident. His other son 'Akash' was also with him.

The ambulance is owned by one driver Nasir Mistri but his assistant Sohel was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Police have detained Sohel.
