Police have detained one person in connection with the murder that took place on Monday night, said Tongibarhi police OC Alamgir Hossain.

The victim, Faisal Dhali, 22, hails from the Upazila’s Nowadda village and had passed his HSC examinations earlier this year.

The injured are Shahidul Islam, 'Aakash' and 'Masum', who were Faisal’s neighbours in Nowadda village.

The man detained is Miraj Miah, son of Shiraj Miahm who hails from Noyadighirpaar village in the same Upazila.

Faisal was involved in a relationship with a young woman, said OC Alamgir.

Miraj was also interested in the same young woman and that was the reason behind his dispute with Faisal, the OC said.

“Faisal and three of his friends were returning from a puja celebration at a neighbouring village when they were attacked by Miraj and his friends.

"Faisal was seriously injured in the attack. The four were taken to the Munshiganj Sadar Hospital where a doctor declared Faisal dead,” he said.

The three injured victims were later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Superintendent of Police Shajedul Alam said that locals had attacked and beat up Miraj after the murder.

Faisal's family is preparing to file a murder case against Miraj.
