Additional District and Sessions judge Zillur Rahman pronounced the verdict on Thursday.

Those who were given the death penalty are Miraz, who is the sole accused still on the run, Jalil and Kalam from the Upazila’s Sadar Union.

They have also been fined Tk 20,000 each, and will undergo six months’ imprisonment in default, said State counsel Khan Md Alauddin.

Those on whom life sentences were pronounced are Mannan, Faruk Khan, Riaz and Jahid, all from the same area.

Alauddin said they were also fined Tk 10,000 each, and will face six months imprisonment in case of a failure to pay it.

Quoting case details, the public prosecutor said Habibur Rahman Akon, father of Rubel Akon, of Uttar Mithakhali had been involved in a land dispute with Faruk and his nephew Ripon.

He said on the night of Jun 22, 2008, Miraz took Rubel to his sister Fatema Aktar Putul’s home at Mothbarhia town. Rubel was later murdered and his body was dumped in a local canal.

A day later, Rubel’s father filed a case of murder with Mothbarhia police, accusing seven people of involvement in his son’s death.
