More than 250 people killed in accidents during Eid-ul-Azha holidays: Jatri Kalyan Samity

More than 250 people died in accidents on Bangladesh’s highways and waterways during the Eid vacations, says an organisation working for the protection of passenger rights.

The Jatri Kalyan Samity (Passenger Welfare Association) revealed the figures on Wednesday.

Its Secretary General, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, told bdnews24.com the Samity’s report, based on data collated between Sep 7 and 18, says 256 people were killed and 176 were injured.

The figures note that 10 people died and 30 sustained injuries in eight waterways mishaps during the 12 days when holidaymakers moved across the country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Another seven people died under the wheels of trains while 50 died after falling from the roofs of coaches.

As many as 112 people were killed and 557 injured in highway mishaps involving head-on collisions of vehicles, according to the report.

It said that 29 were killed in 27 incidents of buses running over people, while 34 died after vehicles skidded off the roads.
