The incident on the town's Bangabandhu Road around Wednesday midnight also left at least 20 others injured, said Sadar Model Police Station's OC Wali Ullah.

The tanker on the street in front of the three-storey building suddenly exploded with a loud bang when it was delivering fuel to a depot housed on the ground floor, he said.

The flames, fuelled by hundreds of barrels of LP gas, octane and diesel stored in the depot, in moments engulfed the other floors of the building and spread to adjacent houses quickly.

Seven people who got burnt are Mizanur Rahman, his son Nur Mohammad, 'Raihan', Badsha Mia, Delwar Bhuiyan, 'Masud' and fire-fighter 'Khokan'.

Khokan was admitted to Chandpur Sadar Hospial. The six others were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Chandpur Sadar Hospial's Dr Belal Hossain told bdnews24.com that four of the injured were in critical condition. "They have suffered 80 to 90 percent burns."

The 20 others got hurt when they either jumped from buildings or hastily rushed out to flee from the fire.

Five units of the Fire Service had put out the flames after three hours, said OC Wali Ullah.

Chandpur Municipality's Ward No. 10 Councillor Dewan Md Shahjahan said the fire had damaged at least six establishments including houses and shops in the area.

Fire Service's Senior Station Officer Md Faruk Ahmed said the fire had become huge due to the fuels stored in the depot.

The district's Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Abdul Hye has said that the incident will be investigated.
