The Bangladesh embassy, in a statement, said the meeting took place in New York on Thursday.

Congressman Jeffries is a member of the Congressional Bangladesh Caucus. A Democrat, he represents the diverse Eighth Congressional District of New York, an area that encompasses large parts of Brooklyn and a section of Queens.

He is also a member of the House Judiciary Committee, House Education Committee and Workforce Committee and is Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The ambassador briefed him on mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and the US in countering terrorism and violent extremism through intelligence sharing and capacity building.

He told the Congressman about Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s policy of “zero tolerance” against all forms of terrorism and violent extremism.

The envoy mentioned the numerous assassination attempts made on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said those had made her “a strong crusader against all forms of extremism and terrorism.”

He also highlighted the development priorities of the government and sought the Congressman’s support for duty-free quota-free market access to the US market.

The Congressman “appreciated” the briefing by the ambassador. He observed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s past was ‘very traumatic’ and was an ‘extraordinary story’.

He said that Bangladesh is particularly “important” to him as well as to the US since there is a “significant” Bangladeshi community living in New York. He termed them “gentle, hard-working and very spiritual”.

He assured the ambassador that he would “certainly” do his own bit to contribute to the expansion of bilateral relations.

Bangladesh Consul General in New York Md Shameem Ahsan and Counsellor (Political) of the Embassy Toufique Hasan were also present at the meeting.
