Bangladesh's largest natural gas distributor says the prices for single burner should be increased to Tk 1,100 from Tk 600 and double burners to Tk 1,200 from Tk 650.

Titas Managing Director Mir Moshiur Rahman made the proposal at a public hearing organised by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Monday.

However, the proposal has been met with opposition from the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) functionaries, businesses and representatives of several political parties.

They said the hike will only afflict the lives of the general people.

CAB Advisor Shamsul Alam said, “Raising the gas prices will be illogical. Rather, Titas should take stern measures to curb system loss and corruption.”

The last time BERC hiked the gas prices was on Aug 27 last year when the tariff was raised to Tk 600 for single burner and Tk 650 for double burners.
