Police said that the seizures were made during a raid Wednesday from a house in the town.

The three held have been identified as Jahirul Islam, 20, ‘Humayun’, 25, and Ruhul Amin, 20, said local police OC Kamrul Islam.

He claimed that they were involved in illegal international telephone call operation using VoIP technology.

VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made free over the Internet.

Police said that they raided an apartment of a six-storey building, which was rented out to Islam, at the town’s Shankiparha, on a tip-off.

“More than 1,000 SIM cards were found, which were registered illegally. We have also found VoIP equipments and National IDs,” said OC Kamrul Islam.

The seizure comes a day after police in Dhaka arrested mobile phone operator Airtel’s three employees over SIM card fraud.

VoIP has been legalised in Bangladesh, but licensed operators have to give away more than 50 percent of revenue to the government, making illegal operations lucrative.
