The elite police unit said that they were arrested during raids on Monday night at Gazipur’s Tongi and Dhaka’s Savar.

The suspects have been identified as Kamruzzaman Kamu, Md Mobarak Hossain, ‘Sagar’, Nazmul Islam and Mohammad Ali, said RAB-1 chief Lt Col Tuhin Md Masud.

He said that Kamu, the ‘mastermind’ behind the killing, was arrested on a tip-off from Savar, which led to arrests of the others. “All of the them took part in the killings.”

Police said that they had arrested 11 people for the murders and seven of them confessed to the killings.

“Kamruzzaman Kamu is accused in 26 cases, including for murder and extortion. He has been sentenced to 34 years in jail in some cases,” said Inspector Aminul Islam of Tongi police.

On the night of May 14, 32-year-old Md Shariful Islam Sharif and 24-year-old Jumman Mia were hacked to death.

The bodies were recovered from a ditch the next day.

The victims’ families said some men called Sharif out of his home while the assailants nabbed Jumman as he had seen Sharif being whisked away.
