Gold smuggler jailed for life in Chittagong

A Chittagong court has sentenced a man to life in prison for trying to smuggle gold bars through the city’s airport.

But Al Amin of Rauzan Upazila, sentenced by Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Shah-e-Noor on Monday, is currently absconding. 

He was arrested by customs detectives at Shah Amanat International Airport on Sept 21, 2014, according to the case files. 

He had arrived in a Biman Bangladesh flight from Dubai and was caught with 58 gold bars, said public prosecutor Md Fakhruddin Chowdhury.    

A case was started with Patenga police under the Special Powers Act. Police submitted the chargesheet on Jan 31 next year. 

The court, which indicted the man on Apr 13, 2015, gave its verdict also fining him Tk 10,000  after hearing six prosecution witnesses.
