A Bangladesh Air Force helicopter carried more than seven metric tonnes of rice to the Tindu and Romacri unions on Sunday afternoon.

The district administration had sent 46 metric tonnes which reached Thanchi Sadar on Saturday evening, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Anwar Hossain.
“The rice will be distributed among 360 families. Each will get 20 kilograms. The remainder from the allotment will be distributed using boats on Tuesday.”
The government has made a list of areas experiencing food crisis in Thanchi to provide relief there until October, he said.
The people living in the hilly region began experiencing food shortage from March after their crops failed due to adverse weather last year.
Locals said many of them could not cultivate Jhum crops using the slash and burn technique due to excess rain. And those who had did not have good yields.
People at Romacri and Tindu have been foraging for food and living on wild vegetables and fruits.
