Clashes during UP polls erupt in Jamalpur, Lakshmipur

Clashes have been reported from Jamalpur and Lakshmipur districts during the Union Parishad polls on Saturday.

At least 23 people have been injured in the clashes.
 
In Jamalpur’s Bahadurabad Union, clashes erupted between supporters of the Awami League candidate and the party’s renegade aspirant over ballot snatching, police said.
 
Quoting witnesses, the district’s police chief Md Nizamuddin said that the supporters attacked police when they intervened.
 
“Police had to open fire to bring the situation under control,” he told bdnews24.com adding that five of his men were among the 20 injured in the clash.
 
Voting has been suspended at the centre.
 
In the southern district of Lakshmipur, a clash between supporters of two candidates forced authorities to suspend voting at a centre in the Sadar Upazila.
 
Police said they had to open fire to disperse the troublemakers.
 
Three people have been hospitalised with injuries sustained at the polling station in Hajiparha Union, said local police OC Azizur Rahman.
