Locals believe the incident is linked to a feud over the recently held union council election in the area.

Police identified the dead as Shahinur Rahman, 32, son of Zaher Ali of Ailachara village.

Kushtia Model police OC Shahabuddin Chowdhury said Shahinur was attacked in his village on Thursday night and died in hospital in the early hours of Friday.

His brother Shamim Reza said Shahin was an Awami League supporter and worked for the party’s candidate in the union council polls held on May 7.

“Shahin invited wrath of supporters of an independent candidate after the Awami League candidate won the election. They have hacked him to death,” he said.

Shamim, however, did not disclose the names of the candidate and his supporters.

OC Shahabuddin said, “Shahin’s records were not good in the area. However, legal action is being taken after looking into the incident.”
