Robbery suspect dies during ‘shootout’ in Brahmanbarhia

Police in Brahmanbarhia say a man wanted on charges of robbery had died in a ‘shootout’.

The dead has been identified as Mahabbat Ali, 30, who, police said, is wanted in several cases of robberies.

The shooting erupted around 3am on Thursday on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway near the district’s Bijoynagar Upazila.

A police patrol raided the area on a tip-off about a robbery, said Bijaynagar police’s Sub Inspector Md Shafikur Rahman.

“The shooting erupted when the robbers opened fire. Mahabbat Ali received bullet injuries during the incident.

“He was taken to the Brahmanbarhia Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead,” SI Rahman told bdnews24.com.

He said that a locally manufactured firearm and some sharp weapons have been seized from the spot.

Police said that three of its men also sustained injuries during the shootout and that they have been treated at local hospitals.
