The first female vice-chancellor of Bangladesh’s top engineering university, BUET, died of cancer early Tuesday morning in Bangkok General Hospital. She was 66.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have mourned her passing.

The Thai Airways Flight TG -321 carrying her remains will reach Dhaka at 12:30pm, the Bangladesh embassy in Bangkok said.

The mission officials there were expediting the process of sending the remains “so that the Namaz-e-Janaza can be held at BUET after Asar prayers.”

Prof Ekram’s family will also be on the plane, the embassy said.
