Rumon Sarwar, 33, is the son of Rifat Amin, an MP from a reserved constituency for women in Satkhira and president of the district unit of Mohila Awami League, the women’s front of the ruling party.

Shyamnagar police OC Enamul Haq said Rumon was detained at the Barsha Tourism Resort with ‘his mother’s licensed firearm’ on Thursday afternoon.

He said three girls accompanying Rumon had been taken to the police station for questioning over his carrying of the firearm.

The MP claimed the three girls were her relatives and that they had gone to visit Kalagachhin in the Sundarbans.

“I went to Tala (Upazila). I forgot to take my licensed revolver from the car after getting back. Rumon went on an outing in that same car. Police found the gun the car while detaining Rumon,” she told bdnews24.com.

Police did not register any case over the incident until the filing of this report on Friday afternoon.

Locals alleged Rumon was involved in various criminal activities.
