Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Dipu Moni was the chief guest of the discussion on May 18 at a Copenhagen community centre where over 100 leaders and activists had convened to celebrate the day.

Hasina returned home on May 17 in 1981, after nearly six years of exile following the gruesome murder of her family members in 1975, including Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Days before her arrival, the Awami League, in the council it held, elected her as the President of the party.

Moni , also a former foreign minister, recalled Hasina’s contribution and said she was the “poet of Bangladesh’s development”.

She, however, asked party leaders in Denmark to be vigilant against anyone trying to taint the image of the country and the party.

State Minister for Finance MA Mannan, All- European Awami League General Secretary M A Gani, Begum Oyasheka Ayesha MP and Dr Habibe Millat MP also spoke as special guests.

President of the Denmark Awami League Mohammad Ali Mollah Linkon and General Secretary Dr Bidduth Barua, former VP of the Dhaka Medical College Students’ Union, moderated the discussion.
