A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved in principle the draft of "The Communicable Diseases Prevention, Control and Eradication Law, 2016" on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters after the meeting that persons affected with such diseases will have to undergo medical tests at specific places.

Patients or their supervisors or those hindering the tests will be jailed for a year and fined a maximum of Tk 200,000, as the draft law proposes, said Alam.

Alam said the draft law, prepared through merging the existing "The Bangladesh Malaria Eradication Board (Repeal) Ordinance, 1977" and "The Prevention of Malaria (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 1978", aims at raising awareness among the population about germs-related diseases.

The draft law categorises germs-related diseases such as Kala-Azar (dumdum fever), anthrax, filariae, dengue, HIV, influenza, Nipah, Ebola, viral hepatitis, and typhoid in addition to other emerging or re-emerging diseases.

The Cabinet also gave the final approval to the draft of "The Cadet College Law, 2016", aimed at establishing more cadet colleges by repealing the Pakistan-era law on the administration of cadet colleges.
