It has also called on the government to make “a serious effort to safeguard freedom of expression and freedom of religion in Bangladesh”.

Chargé d'affaires of the Danish embassy in Dhaka Jakob Haugaard made the call in a statement on Tuesday in the wake of the murders of two LGBT rights activist Xulhaz Mannan and his theatre activist friend Mahbub Tonoy on Monday.

‘‘We are deeply concerned about the recent murders and increase in violent attacks on individuals and minority groups in Bangladesh,” he said, condemning these brutalities.

He said Denmark would continue “to support efforts to ensure that all citizens of Bangladesh are able to express their views freely and without fear’”.
