An order issued by the Election Commission’s NID wing on Wednesday said that fingerprints could be updated at election offices across the country.

Registration for mobile phone SIM cards with biometric details officially took off on Dec 16 last year.

Subscribers now have to provide fingerprints for buying SIM cards while owners of previously issued SIMs will have to register in the new process by April.

But many cases of mismatch had been reported, which prompted the move to facilitate updating, said NID Wing Director Syed Mohammad Musa.

He said that citizens would have to turn up at the local election offices with their NIDs to update fingerprints.

The updated fingerprints will be then forward to the NID Wing in Dhaka.

In its order issued on Wednesday, the EC stressed on adopting ‘maximum caution’ as fingerprint is a ‘very important and confidential’ aspect to identify a citizen.
