The 12-storey building caught fire around 1am on Sunday.

Munnujan Begum lost consciousness while trapped on the eight floor of the building.  More than 50 others were evacuated from the building, said Fire Service official Brozen Kumar Sarkar.

The 75-year-old woman lived in the flat with her son and his family. She was declared dead at a hospital.

“The elderly woman could not get out with the others. Some people were slightly injured while rushing out of the building,” said Hazaribagh Police OC Mir Alimuzzaman.
Seven fire-fighting units brought the fire under control after an hour.  By then, eight of the floors had been damaged.
A short circuit in the lift’s wires might have caused the fire to spread from the lower to the upper floors of the building, said OC Alimuzzaman.
Fire service officials said it would take them time to calculate the extent of damage.
