AL leader Suranjit demands punishment for culprits in tea-seller death within a month

Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has demanded that the perpetrators of the murder of Babul Matubbor be brought to book within a month.

Matubbor, a tea-seller in Dhaka, died on Thursday from burns after police allegedly attacked him on Wednesday, causing an oil spill from a stove.
 
Speaking at a discussion in Dhaka, Sengupta said that it was a “sensational incident.”
 
“Police in whom people repose their trust are involved in the case," he added.
 
“What is there to investigate? Bring this case to speedy tribunal as soon as possible. Uphold law and order by announcing verdict within a month,” the senior politician said.
 
The Awami League Advisory Council member and former minister demanded that action be taken against the ‘erring policemen’ under section 302 of Bangladesh Penal Code.
 
Several policemen allegedly tried to extort money from Babul.
 
Babul’s family said his jacket caught fire when oil splashed out of a stove after policemen hit it with their batons when he refused to comply with their demands for money.
 
Police have been claiming that Babul was a drug dealer who injured himself while trying to run away from a police informer who had gone to his tea shop.
 
Five policemen were suspended over this incident.
 
Of late, police have got embroiled in quite a few controversies that drew nationwide flak.
 
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters that the perpetrators would be brought to justice after investigation.
