Police also seized all the meat in the shop of butcher ‘Yasin’, 33, at Kitchen Market No. 16 after his arrest on Sunday morning.

The two others held are his accomplices ‘Fakruddin’, 40, and Hiru Mia, 22.

Adabor Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Jahan-e-Alam told bdnews24.com police raided the shop following a tip-off.

One ‘Akbar’, who owns a farm at the Sunibirh Housing in the area, bought a cow for Tk 120,000 last week, ASI Alam said.

But it died of an unidentified disease around 11:30pm on Saturday, he said.

“Those arrested tried to sell the cow’s meat after it had died,” he said.

Farm owner Akbar said he had asked local labourer Fakruddin to bury the animal.

“I gave him (Fakruddin) Tk 500 and suggested that he sell the hide,” he added.

Instead, Alam said, Fakruddin and his man Hiru struck a bargain with Yasin, selling him the dead cow for Tk 10,000.

Yasin skinned the carcass at the farm, carrying off the flesh to his shop in the dead of night, the officer said.

Monir Hossain, another butcher at the market, told bdnews24.com that Yasin had set up his business in the market six months ago.

“Had the police not arrived in time, he would have started selling the meat,” Hossain added.

The ASI said police were investigating whether Yasin had sold the meat of dead cattle before.
