Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the ministry’s Joint Secretary Md Borhan Uddin said that the Bangladesh Hajj Mission will stay in Makkah for the next one and half month.
Usually, temporary mission officials wrap up their work and return to Jeddah after the Hajj.
A total of 769 people died in a stampede in Mina on Thursday, when pilgrims were heading for the ritual of stoning the Jamarat pillars—the symbolic rejection of ‘the devil’.
Bangladesh foreign ministry confirmed on Tuesday that there were at least 26 Bangladeshi pilgrims among the victims.
“We expect the bodies will be handed over to relatives within 45 days. Unidentified bodies will be buried in Saudi Arabia,” said the ministry official.
He said that 52 Bangladeshis are still missing since the incident. “The death toll (of Bangladeshis) may rise.”
