‘Robber’ killed in RAB ‘shootout’ in Bagerhat

A 30-year-old man has been killed in a 'shootout' with the Rapid Action Battalion in  Sharankhola range of Sundarbans in Bagerhat.

RAB-8 Commander Lt Col Faridul Alam claimed the deceased, ‘Khalil’, was the second top man of a gang of robbers called 'Monir Bahini'. .

Alam said they raided Dorjar canal area around 5:30am on Monday based on a tip off about the gang’s presence.

“The robbers opened fire on us when we entered the canal. We also retaliated. They fled after 30 minutes of exchange of fire.

“After they left, we went to the spot and found the body along with the weapons and other materials.”

The seizure list contains four double-barrelled shotguns, one single-barrelled gun, three sawed-off rifles, three light guns, an air-gun, various ammunition, sharp weapons, mobile phone and tokens for collecting ransom and protection money.

The law enforcement agency claimed the local fishermen indentified the deceased after they saw the body.

The body and the seized material were taken to Sharankhola Police Station.
