Bangladesh inks MoU with Mexico paving way for bilateral discussions

Bangladesh and Mexico have signed an MoU to create a formal platform to discuss bilateral issues, hold Foreign Office Consultations, and make "a new beginning" in relations.

The foreign ministry described the signing ceremony as a “historic moment” in Dhaka-Mexico City relations on the eve of the 40th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.
 
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam signed the MOU with Mexican Foreign Minister José Antonio Meade Kuribreña at the Mexican foreign ministry on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Alam, now in Mexico, is on a first such bilateral visit from Bangladesh.
 
After the signing, both ministers discussed a range of bilateral issues and agreed to engage in intense dialogue through this MoU.
 
The first Foreign Office Consultation will take place in Dhaka.
 
The state minister went to Mexico on Aug 24 and held meetings with ministers, business leaders and Bangladeshi expatriates.
 
Expatriate Bangladeshi’s requested Alam to take steps to open a Mexican mission in Dhaka.
 
Alam discussed the issue with the Mexican foreign minister, who hoped to open a mission “at their earliest convenience”.
 
“Mexico is aware of the need of opening their embassy in Bangladesh,” the foreign ministry quoted the Mexican minister as saying. 
 
He also accepted Alam’s invitation to visit Bangladesh.
 
Meanwhile, the state minister also met the Presidents and Director Generals of the leading apparel manufacturing companies of Mexico at a breakfast meeting on Wednesday.
 
The foreign ministry said this first-ever visit had generated lot of enthusiasm among the members of Mexico’s business community.
 
They seemed to consider Bangladesh as “a promising destination for Mexican investments”. 
  
They also expressed their readiness to visit Bangladesh to explore trade and investment opportunities within this year.
 
They sought Bangladesh’s participation in two mega expositions, ‘Intermoda Fair’ and ‘Puebla Fair’ to be held in Jan next year to showcase Bangladesh’s products.
