Speaking at a discussion at the Ramna Kali Mandir on Friday, he said India wanted friendly relations with its neighbour.

He cited the recently concluded Land Boundary Agreement to resolve the contentious border issues.

Shastri dubbed the move “unprecedented”.

“No such agreement took place anywhere in the world,” he said in Hindi.

India gave Bangladesh 111 enclaves and got 51 in return, he added.

The enclave dwellers, denied basic rights for decades, were given the opportunity to choose between India and Bangladesh as their preferred country.

Some of them residing in Bangladesh said they preferred going to India.

“India is ready to accept them as it wants to maintain friendly ties with its neighbours,” the BJP spokesperson added.

“The issues between India and Bangladesh will be resolved,” he said. “I can see the future... India will gradually fulfil other commitments it made to Bangladesh.”

He also spoke about problems faced by Hindus in Bangladesh.

Shastri lauded the incumbent Sheikh Hasina government for trying to solve the problems faced by the minority communities.

“You’ll have to continue your fight,” he told the Hindus.
