Police said Md Sumon, 35, of Mymensingh, lived in the slums at Gulshan’s Korail. He worked in a readymade garment factory.
The incident took place near Sainik Club at Banani on Monday afternoon, Kamalapur Government Railway Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam said quoting witnesses.
He said Sumon pushed the child, probably 8-year old, who was playing on the railway tracks, out of its path only moments before the train was about to run over it.
“The train ran over both of Sumon’s legs and he sustained severe head injuries,” said Islam.
He was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
SI Islam could not provide the identity of the child.
