Animal welfare group Obhoyaronno had filed the case on June 18 after several youths beat a stray dog to a pulp at Dhaka’s Rampura.

Rampura police OC Mahbubur Rahman on Saturday told bdnews24.com that they were expecting to receive a certification of injuries sustained by the dog from the veterinary experts on Sunday.

“We will submit the chargesheet after receiving that,” he said.

On July 7, police arrested three youths accused of abusing the dog, nearly three weeks after Obhoyaronno founder Rubaiya Ahmad filed the case.

The three accused are currently out on bail having signed a bond.

But they were required to report to the police station once every week, OC Rahman said.

The case was filed under Section 4 of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1920 which prohibits such abuse of animals, said Obhoyaronno’s Head of Legal Affairs Nadia Choudhury.

If convicted, the accused may face a maximum of three-month jail term.

On Dec 14 last year, Obhoyaronno also secured a High Court order banning dog-culling, bullfighting, goat-fighting and cockfighting in the country.
