The baby girl was also breast feeding more than before, said Ashraful Haq Kajal, the head of paediatric surgery department at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), on Saturday.

Kajal is a member of the 10-strong medical board which is supervising the child’s treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

“We have increased the child’s breast milk consumption rate to 5 millilitres from 2 millilitres. She is taking that easily. Her wounds are also healing,” he said.

“We are doing everything we can for her full recovery,” Kajal added.

Supporters of Magura Juba League activist Kamrul Bhuiyan clashed with former Juba League supporters Mohammad Ali and ‘Ajibor’ on July 23.

Stray bullets had hit Najma Begum, 30, the pregnant wife of Kamrul’s brother, and their neighbour Miraz Hossain during the clash.

Kamrul’s uncle Abdul Momin was killed in the incident.

Doctors at a Magura hospital performed surgeries on Najma to save her child that night. The infant was transferred to the DMCH two days later.

Dr Kajal on July 28 said a bullet had passed through the right side of the child’s body but did not damage any vital organ.

Najma came to the DMCH on Thursday night. But the doctors did not allow her to meet the child until Saturday.

The mother’s breast milk was being collected and delivered to the baby.

“Doctors have said that my baby’s condition is improving,” Najma told bdnews24.com. She also urged all to pray for her daughter.
