Supreme Court to hear state’s petition seeking stay on four BNP leaders’ bail on July 27

The Appellate Division will hear on July 27 the state’s petition against the anticipatory bail granted to four senior BNP leaders in 56 cases of violence.

The Supreme Court’s Chamber Judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date on Tuesday for hearing by a regular bench.
 
Additional Attorney General Murad Reza represented the state while Zainul Abedin and Mahbub Uddin Khokan stood for the defence before the judge.
 
Sagir Hossain Leon and Ehsanur Rahman assisted the defence lawyers.
 
Leon said the state sought stay order on the bail granted to three of the leaders on July 14.
 
The state appealed against Tariqul Islam’s anticipatory bail on Tuesday, he said.
 
“The court sent the petition for hearing at a regular Appellate Division bench on July 27,” he said.
 
On July 9, the High court granted four-week anticipatory bail to BNP leaders MK Anwar, Tariqul Islam, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Amanullah Aman.
 
BNP’s Joint Secretary General Aman secured anticipatory bail in 42 cases filed over incidents of violence and sabotage registered with Paltan, Shahbagh, Mirpur and Shahbagh police.
 
Party’s Standing Committee member Anwar got bail in nine cases filed over similar charges with Paltan, Jatrabarhi, Khilgaon and Comilla’s Chouddogram police.
 
Another Standing Committee member, Islam, was granted anticipatory bail in four cases filed with Jessore police.
 
BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s adviser Mintoo got bail in a case filed with the Paltan police.
