Ten firefighting units tamed the flames after about five hours around 10pm on Sunday, Abdul Hamid, Senior Station Officer of EPZ Fire Service, told bdnews24.com.

The two-storey factory building erected on steel frames with tin fencing was burnt to ashes, he said.

It would take another two hours to douse the fire, Hamid added.

Inspector Deepak Kumar Saha of Ashulia Police Station said the fire originated at the warehouse of ‘Akij Footwear Limited’ at Narsinghapur in the afternoon.

Locals contacted the fire service seeing smokes belching out of the factory.

Hamid said the fire quickly spread as the factory had a large amount of leather, leather goods and flammable materials.

It was unclear what caused the fire.

“But there was no casualty as the factory was closed for Eid vacation,” the fireman added.
