Lowlands flooded, rivers flowing above danger level

Rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Bogra, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Sylhet and Sunamganj following torrential rain coupled with flush floods.

The Teesta rose 24 centimetres to flow 22 centimetres above the danger level at the Dalia point, according to data released on Sunday by the Bangladesh Water Development Board’s flood forecasting and warning centre.

The Jamuna rose by six centimetres to flow two centimetres above the danger level at Bahadurabad and by 10 points in Sariakandi, where it is flowing 14 points above the danger level. 

Kongsho river is flowing 57 centimetres above the danger mark at the Jariajanjail point after a 8-centimetre rise. 

Meanwhile, Ghagot River’s flow has dropped by a centimetre in the last 24 hours but it is still at the danger level at the Gaibandha Point.
The Surma River’s flow also went down by 9 centimetres but it was still 26 centimetres above the danger level at the Sunamganj point.
The forecast for the next 24 hours predicts that water levels in the Brahmaputra and Surma-Kushiara Rivers will start dropping, while levels in the Ganga-Padma river system might rise. 
Flood situations in Bogra, Sylhet, Jamalpur and Gaibandha are expected to worsen, while an improvement is foreseen in Sunamganj. 
Tangail recorded 150 millimetres of rainfall over the last 24 hours, while Sylhet followed with 117 millimetres.
Kanaighat recorded 102, Mahadebpur 70, and Rangamati 60 millimetres.  
The Met office predicted heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours in the country’s north-eastern region.
