Bangladesh’s peacekeepers have played a crucial role in establishing peace in the West African nation.

Its Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ebun Strasser-King said they were in dire need of teachers especially to teach mathematics and sciences, whom they would like to recruit from Bangladesh.

They would formally approach Bangladesh government, she said while meeting Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali in Kuwait on Thursday.

Ali left Kuwait for Dhaka after attending the OIC meeting.

The foreign ministry said before he left, the deputy minister of Sierra Leone and other ministers of different countries called on him.

The West African country emerged from a decade of civil war in 2002, with the help of a large UN peacekeeping mission.

Strasser-King “gratefully” recalled the Bangladeshi peacekeepers’ positive contribution.

She said her government would soon send a formal invitation to a group of former peacekeepers of Bangladesh to visit her country.

The foreign minister expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to assist Sierra Leone in all aspects.

He also mentioned that Bangladesh was also considering opening a full diplomatic mission in Sierra Leone.  Both the ministers agreed that the move would further consolidate the bilateral relation.

The foreign minister also met his Djibouti counterpart Mahamoud Ali Youssouf on the sidelines of the OIC Council for Foreign Ministers.

He thanked Youssouf’s government for providing humanitarian assistance to the stranded Bangladeshis arriving from Yemen to Djibouti, and arrangements made for their safe passage to Bangladesh.
