Mohammad Yusuf, 55, of Hnila Union’s Leda village was involved in smuggling people to Malaysia with the help of his relatives there, Teknaf Police Station OC Ataur Rahman Khandaker said.

He was arrested from his residence around 4:30am on Saturday.

OC Khandaker said Yusuf used to coordinate the traffickers gang,

“Several of his relatives have human trafficking cases,” he said.

Police were conducting a drive to arrest Yusuf’s associates.

Bangladesh has been cracking down on human traffickers since a mass grave of migrants was found in Thailand recently.

Meanwhile in the same village, Teknaf police arrested two brothers for selling banned Yaba tablets just half an hour after the arrest of Yusuf.

They are Sirajul Islam, 29, and Shafiul Islam, 26.

Police seized 10,000 banned tablets from their house, the OC said.
