Ronnie Coffman, a professor of the Ivy League private university in the US, handed over the letter of appreciation at her office on Wednesday, her Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury said.

The citation is signed by David Skorton, president of the Ithaca, New York-based university that decoded the genome sequence of BT Brinjal and transferred its technology to Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute.

Coffman informed Hasina that the new variety of the brinjal was protected against insect attacks, obviating the need for pesticides.

Hasina said food sufficiency had been made possible by her government’s measures for agricultural progress.

She added that her government’s target was to ensure nutrition for Bangladesh’s 160 million people.
