Police say they suspect they were killed during a robbery in South Nalaparha.

Sadarghat Police Station’s OC Abul Kalam Azad said Nasima Begum, 28, wife of a local butcher Shah Alam, and their daughter Ria Akhter Falguni, were killed between 9am to 11am on Thursday.

Alam was not at home, while his two sons were in school.

The tutor of the couple’s children, Md Rocky, 22, has been arrested over the killings.

Nasima’s body was found in their living room, while Ria, a fourth-grader at Madarbarhi Girls’ High School, was found in the bathroom.

He claimed about 10 bhories (1 bhori=11.66 grams) of jewellery and Tk 120,000 had gone missing from the home.

OC Azad said from the way Alam’s wife and daughter had been murdered, it appeared to be the work of non-professionals.

“We are investigating whether it was a case of robbery," he said.

Alam told police that he had left the house around 7:45am. Around 9:07am he talked to his wife for the last time before he took his sons to school.

His brother-in-law Mohammad Alal said their maid found the main door open and the bodies lying on the floor around 10am.

Azad said a knife, smeared with blood, was found in the living room.

City police’s Assistant Commissioner Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf said, “We found the lock of the closet broken. On the staircase, we found blood and a red pouch, which seems to have been used for keeping jewellery.”

CID’s Inspector Mitusree Barua told  bdnews24.com  that Nasima had been stabbed on her chest, belly, back, thigh and neck while Ria had been slaughtered.

She said they collected 16 pieces of evidence from the scene.
