State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam and his Omanese counterpart Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi signed the agreement in Muscat on Sunday.

The foreign ministry said the understanding marked “a new drive to strengthen and consolidate further the existing relations” in all fields.

The junior minister went to Oman on Saturday on a two-day visit.

He held official meetings with Oman’s minister of interior, minister of foreign affairs, and the state minister for foreign affairs.

During his meeting with the foreign minister, he got Muscat’s assurance on help for Bangladeshis stranded in Yemen.

The foreign ministry said the Omani minister advised Bangladeshis to report to the Al-Majuna border at Salalah in Oman for evacuation.

The junior minister also stressed on manpower export.

He said Bangladesh would provide more manpower to meet the demands of the Sultanate’s rapidly growing industrial and service sectors.

Alam said Bangladesh had young professional, technical, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers fit for employment in the Sultanate to sustain the pace of its economic growth.

Some 300 doctors and a good number of university professors or teachers are currently working in Oman with high reputation.

Alam asked the Omani side to ease the visa process for Bangladeshi businessmen and entrepreneurs. This would help them to find ways to expand business and trade.

He sought the extension of ‘Visa on Arrival’ facility for Bangladeshis holding diplomatic and official passports.

The foreign minister of Oman is said to have responded positively, expressing the hope that these issues would be dealt with at the foreign office consultations.

The Omani side also showed interest in cultural exchange programmes, training of government officers, the holding of trade fairs, and cooperation in trade and investment, especially the signing of an agreement eliminating double taxation and Protection and Promotion of Investment.

The foreign ministry expects the first round of the consultation to be held in Dhaka soon.
