The border guards nabbed one Shah Alamgir, 35, after the incident at the Upazila’s Balukhali around 12pm Friday.

The injured, Subedar Fazlul Haque, was admitted to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital with a bullet wound on his neck, a BGB official said.

BGB’s 17th Battalion Commander Lt Col Khandker Saiful Alam said police and they were raiding the area to arrest the other traffickers who managed to flee the scene.

He said they had detained 108 Rohingyas from Balukhali’s Panbazar area after they, led by the traffickers, crossed the border and illegally entered Bangladesh from Myanmar.

The traffickers opened fire on the BGB personnel, leaving one officer injured, he said.

Lt Col Alam said the detained Rohingyas were sent back to Myanmar around 3:30pm.

Two jeeps, used for transporting the Rohingyas, were seized from the scene and impounded. Their owner was also detained.

Residents of the area alleged that the local BNP leader and Palongkhali Union Chairman Gofur Uddin Chowdhury was involved in the trafficking.

Police’s Ukhia circle Assistant Superintendent Jasim Uddin Majumdar said the situation in the area was currently normal.

BGB in the early hours of Friday also sent 29 other Rohingyas back to Myanmar through the Ukhia border.
