The religious affairs ministry says Minister Motiur Rahman, currently visiting Saudi Arabia, has requested the authorities there to extend the quota of the Bangladeshi pilgrims.

At present, 101,758 pilgrims can go to Makkah for the annual Hajj.

“The Saudi government has given the assurance to consider Bangladesh’s request if there’s a written application,” ministry PRO Mohammad Anwar Hossain said, quoting the minister.

He told bdnews24.com that an agreement was likely to be inked between Rahman and the Saudi minister for Hajj on Thursday.

As per the present agreement, 10,000 pilgrims can go on Hajj under government management and the rest through private channels.

The online registrations closed on Mar 1. Each applicant had registered online by depositing Tk 28,074.

The Cabinet on Dec 8 approved two Hajj packages costing Tk 354,745 and Tk 296,206.

Both packages exclude charges for sacrificial animals.
