Thumb of his other hand too has been severed when the bomb he was allegedly making went off.

Police said the blast occurred around 9:45am on Saturday when Abdul Alim, 32, was making bombs at his house in Chandna.

Joydebpur police OC Khandker Rezaul Hasan Reza said the law enforcers arrested him with the help of locals when he was trying to flee after the explosion.

He was taken to the local Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka’s National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital’s physician Abdus Salam Sarker said Alim lost the wrist of his left arm and the thumb of the right hand.

Some other fingers of the right hand were also badly injured, he added.

OC Rezaul said an accomplice of the Shibir member fled the scene. Police were trying to catch him, he added.

Five litres of petrol, one kilogram of gunpowder, some empty bottles, and tools used in making petrol and crude bombs were recovered from the house, the OC said.

The police official said Alim’s elder brother was a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in Gazipur.

Shibir is the student affiliate of Jamaat, which is enforcing a blockade along with its closest ally BNP since Jan 5.

OC Rezaul said the two brothers had cases on charges of sabotages against them.

Meanwhile, miscreants have lobbed a firecracker at a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination centre at Chandna.

Joydebpur police Sub-Inspector Abdul Hamid said some ‘unidentified people’ hurled a firecracker through a window of Chandna High School and College, where SSC examinations were underway around 9:45am.
