Established in 1959, AIT now ranks number two among Thai universities, in the top ten Asian universities and among top 250 in the world.

Nearly 1,100 Bangladeshi students have done graduation, post-graduation and PhD in engineering, technology, environment, energy, IT, banking and management and gender studies at the AIT, the foreign ministry said.

Around 4,000 civil servants, bankers and professionals from Bangladesh have also undergone short-term training courses there.

The foreign ministry said Bangladesh’s nomination was proposed by former foreign minister of Thailand Subin Pinkayan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AIT, during Thursday’s elections.

Ambassador Tasneem is also Chairperson of the newly formed five-member ‘Taskforce on Campaign for AIT Funding’. Sahas Bunditkul, Professor Emeritus and former deputy prime minister and interim minister of foreign affairs of Thailand are also on the taskforce.

In the Trustees meeting, the ambassador reaffirmed the “commitment” of the Bangladesh government to engage “more proactively” with the AIT.

She said more Bangladeshi students will study different programmes there.
