So far, 36 people have been rescued by the locals along with help of the Coast Guard and police, said Kutubdia police OC Aungsa Thoyai.

The trawler sank at the sea's Khudiyar Tek Point in the Kutubdiya Channel.

"The rescued passengers said they had boarded the trawler for Malaysia on Wednesday night from Chittagong's Majher Ghat," said OC Thoyai.

Coast Guard Sub Lieutenant MA Hashem said that the rescued passengers told them there were over 100 people on the trawler.

The coast guard's rescue vessel 'Tanvir' have started for the spot from Chittagong, he added.
