Fire at Fakirapool kills one

A man has died after a building in Dhaka’s Fakirapool caught fire.

Ebadat Fakir, 45, was suffocated by the smoke, said the doctors at Dhaka Medical College hospital when they declared him dead on Sunday night.

He was the security guard of the building – Paramount Height.

A fire started from the ground floor of the building at Culvert Road around 12am Monday, said Fire Service Control Room official Shahjadi Sultana.

“It quickly spread to the upper floors.”

Eighteen fire service units worked for hours to tame the flames around 3am, she said.

An electric shot-circuit could have led to the fire , fire service officials say. The extent of the damages was yet to be known.

“Five fell sick due to the smoke from the fire,” said Paltan Police OC Morshed Alam.

The remaining four were treated at local hospitals, he said.
